You might sell a stranger something once, but isn't it better to make a friend - who might come back again and again because they like you and they love what you do? People don't like being overtly 'sold' to. (think, honestly, how you feel when someone presses the hard sell on you...) Much better to put aside the hard sell and concentrate on getting to know your customers instead - and on letting them get to know you.
They may not buy something immediately - but they will remember being spoken to with respect by someone they will now regard as an interesting person rather than someone desperate for a sale. And if they like your stuff, they will buy on the basis of the killer combination of the quality of your work and the warmth of your approach - and for that same reason are much more likely to come back again and again.
The Art of Work is about: Striking a balance between the work you do for love and the work you do for money, developing mastery, building quality and track record, finding a confident voice to communicate with others - generally becoming better at the business of being creative. And it's a place to find help with all of the above...
