Page 36 - Discovery Marketing

A few weeks ago, we held an open event in our garden. The aim was to meet new people, eat cake, and have a good time. My partner Janet had been talking with our good friend and artist Maxine Greer who has an upcoming show at Origin later in the year. She makes these wonderful paper sparrows which together make up 'Flock' - Maxine's  way of raising awareness of this lovely little bird's 'threatened species' status.

Max brought along hundreds of them, and displayed them around the house and garden for people to discover as they wandered around, chatted and and ate. Our visitors were amused and amazed. It was a wonderful focus for our event, led to sales for Maxine, and contributed to a great atmosphere for the event overall.

This form of 'discovery marketing' - where people get the chance to get up close to work, sample it in some way, and get to talk with the artists, is just one of the ideas I explore on page 36 of  'Make Your Creativity Pay.'

It completely cuts out the need to feel pressured to sell - you just need to be there and talk about the work. And, of course, eat cake  :)
