Robin Wood/Heritage Crafts at Glastonbury
I went to Glastonbury this year and had the pleasure of meeting Robin Wood – heritage craftsman and Chair of the Heritage Crafts Association. Robin has a worldwide reputation for promoting and developing Heritage Crafts.
Robin practices bowl turning using heritage craft techniques rather than contemporary bowl turning methodology – the main difference is that no sanding and finishing takes place – the final finish of the piece is determined solely by the dexterity of the crafts person and the sharpness of the tool. The piece is turned on a pole lathe, then finished with curved knives.
Robin does sterling work on behalf of the Heritage Crafts Association which is the advocacy body for traditional heritage crafts - and his stand in the Green Fields had the dual purpose of allowing Robin to demonstrate his craftsmanship and promote the work of the HCA. You can find out more about the HCA at www.heritagecrafts.org.uk/
Robin has made replica bowls, plates and cutlery for a number of nationally important exhibits including: The Mary Rose Trust, the Tower of London, The Globe Theatre, and for use in Ridley Scott’s film ‘Nottingham’
Robin has his own website at http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/
